| Abstract: | Examines contemporary relationship between science and politics in polar regions, with particular emphasis on Antarctic and role of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and other bodies in informing decision-making. Contrasts situation in Antarctic, with highly-developed, legally-binding regimes, and policy decisions theoretically based on high-quality science research, with that of Arctic, lacking cohesive legal regime. Sovereignty and national interest remain defining factors in both areas, but International Polar Years provide opportunity to restore scientific priorities. |
