Abstract: Presents detailed study of sedimentological and macrofossil changes in three Holocene sediment successions in Sisimiut area, south-west Greenland. Lowlands were glaciated during last glacial stage, and deglaciated at ca 11 cal. ka BP. Deglaciation was followed by ~1,000-year-long period with unstable soils and open pioneer vegetation with herbs and mosses, but without woody plants. First woody plant to arrive was Empetrum nigrum, soon followed by Salix herbacea and various ericaceous dwarf shrubs. Sediment successions indicate only minor environmental changes after deglaciation. Sulphur contents in sediments and some macrofossils suggest that Early to Mid-Holocene was relatively warm and dry.
