Abstract: Uses case of single Buryat village to discuss issues such as role of tradition in modern Buryat life, process of modernisation and prospects for revitalisation of ethnic culture. Examines origin of village, educational level of population, homogeneity of population, role of shamanism and Lamaism and Buryat language, family life and structure, marriage, employment. Considers isolation of village as feature which hinders development of market economy yet facilitates preservation of ethnic culture.
