In: | Understanding Earth's polar challenges : International Polar Year 2007-2008 : summary by the IPY Joint Committee. (2011.), |
Abstract: | Describes development of Southern Ocean Observing System during International Polar Year 2007-08. Describes intention, to provide near-synoptic assessment of physical, biogeochemical, and biological state of Southern Ocean and insight into change. Includes following elements: repeat hydrography, underway sampling from ships, enhanced Southern Ocean Argo profiling floats, time-series stations and monitoring of key passages, phytoplankton and primary production, zooplankton and micronekton, ecological monitoring, animal-borne sensors, sea ice observations, enhanced meteorological observations, and remote sensing. |
