Record #200221:

Words and silence: Nenets reindeer herders' conversion to evangelical Christianity / Laur Vallikivi.

Title: Words and silence: Nenets reindeer herders' conversion to evangelical Christianity / Laur Vallikivi.
Author(s): Vallikivi, Laur.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: Cambridge: Scott Polar Research Institute
Abstract: Explores through anthropological analysis encounter in tundra between Nenets reindeer herders and Russian/Ukrainian fundamentalist Protestant evangelical missionaries. Based on long-term fieldwork amongst indigenous Pentecostal and Baptist converts. Reports first ethnography of religious conversion in contemporary indigenous Russian North. Examines how missionaries evangelise and how Nentsy respond. Focuses on role of language and silence in mission encounter and central part played by introduction of new speech practices and new language ideology based on idea of speakers expected to reflect "inner" life in words. Demonstrates how new Christians were urged to abandon some traditional practices such as drinking reindeer blood.
Notes:

Includes references (p.209-232); glossary of Nenets and Russian words; notes on transliteration, translation and Bible citations.
