Abstract: Analyses complex cultural processes in Russian North connected with changes in self-identification of local groups. Focuses on case of Pomory and Komi. Pomory are considered to be northern Russian ethnic group with economy based on sea fishing and marine mammal hunting. Izhma Komi are northernmost group of Komi engaged in reindeer herding. Since 2000 both groups have sought reidentification. Examines reasons for and conditions of these changes, and also composition of new identities which differ markedly from previous forms. Ideologues of new Pomor movement now consider themselves to be Finno-Ugrians rather than Slavs, whilst leaders of Izhma-Komi movement insist that they should be seen as separate people and not part of Komi ethnic community.
