Abstract: Reports adoption by Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of series of guidelines to support uniform implementation of mandatory measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce emission of greenhouse gases from international shipping. MEPC discussions encompassed environmental aspects of Polar Code (mandatory code for ships operating in polar waters), which is intended to cover full range of shipping-related matters relevant to navigation in waters surrounding poles, and protection of unique environment and ecosystems in polar regions.
