| Abstract: | Reports on Norwegian-US Scientific Traverse through East Antarctic from Norwegian station Troll to South Pole in austral summer 2007-08 and back on different route in 2008-09. Aim of traverse was to improve understanding of mass balance of East Antarctica and its contribution to sea level change, provide field date for calibration of model assessments as well as satellite-based estimates, and obtain information about climate signals in past millennium. Traverse included visits to sites measured during South Pole Queen Maud Land Traverses in 1960s to update records. Following were collected: radar data obtained using different frequencies, firn cores, snow samples, surface observations and temperature measurements. Firn cores were analysed by dielectric profiling to detect volcanic eruptions to date cores, permitting mean accumulation rates between volcanic horizons to be calculated. |
