Abstract: Investigates upper ocean (top 200 m) heat content in Canada Basin, using conductivity, temperature and depth data collected during summers of 2003 and 2008. Analyzes variation of heat content with depth, heat content differences between summers, principal driving factors and horizontal spatial scale differences. Sea ice reduction observed in 2008 produced more fresh water in upper ocean, leading to change in seawater properties. Study indicates that large reduction in sea ice would result in two changes: widespread warming of upper ocean, and substantial increase in depth of Pacific inflow water to Canada Basin.
