Record #199959:
Snow accumulation, melt, mass loss, and the near-surface ice temperature structure of Irenebreen, Svalbard / I. Sobota.
Title: | Snow accumulation, melt, mass loss, and the near-surface ice temperature structure of Irenebreen, Svalbard / I. Sobota. |
Author(s): | Sobota, I. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | Polar Science. (2011.), Vol. 5(3) (2011) |
Abstract: | Examines mass balance, accumulation, melt, and near-surface ice thermal structure of Irenebreen, 4.1 km² glacier in north-west Svalbard. Findings indicate that Irenebreen is potentially polythermal, with cold ice and temperate surface layer, during summer. Temperate surface layer is influenced by seasonal changes in temperature. In winter, all of ice is below melting point and temperate layers are probasbly present in basal sections of glacier. supposition is supported by presence of icings in forefield of Irenebreen. Similar thermal reginme has been reported for other Svalbard glaciers. |
