Record #199948:

Archaeological investigations of alpine ice patches in the Selwyn Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada / Thomas D. Andrews, Glen MacKay, Leon Andrew.

Title: Archaeological investigations of alpine ice patches in the Selwyn Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada / Thomas D. Andrews, Glen MacKay, Leon Andrew.
Author(s): Andrews, Thomas D.
MacKay, Glen.
Andrew, Leon.
Date: 2012.
In: Arctic. (2012.), Vol. 65 (supp. 1) (2012)
Abstract: Reports authors' use of remote sensing analysis to document eight ice patch sites in Selwyn and Mackenzie Mountains, NWT, containing well-preserved archaeological artefacts and biological specimens. Collections from ice patches in Selwyn Mountains include examples of three pre-contact hunting technologies: throwing dart (atlatl), bow-and-arrow, and snare. Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) dominates faunal remains recovered from ice patches. Data suggest that hunting on ice patches was part of broader-spectrum summer subsistence economy focused on broad alpine valley, known locally as K'atieh, and that hunters tended to target ice patches close to other subsistence locations in this area.
Notes:

Arctic. Vol. 65 (supp. 1) :1-21 (2012).
