Abstract: | Reports application of "erosion algorithm" (greyscale morphology image processing technique) to satellite-derived sea ice concentrations in northern Bering Sea, to investigate polynya dynamics throughout region. Greyscale morphology allows for estimation of sea ice extent with defined error tolerance through removal of regions with low sea ice concentrations in marginal ice zone. Results compare well with those calculated by more traditional methods utilising sea ice concentration thresholds, and demonstrate utility of greyscale morphology as preprocessing method (eliminating artificial determination of polynya areal extents and enabling automation of overall image-processing routine). |
