Abstract: Brief report on discovery of large subglacial basin beneath West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) near Weddell Sea. Comparison with other parts of WAIS considered vulnerable to melting suggests that steeply downward sloping edges and smooth bed of basin may trigger positive feedback mechanism if grounding line begins to retreat upstream.
