Record #199814:

Pliocene and Pleistocene glaciations of Iceland: a brief overview of the glacial history / Áslaug Geirsdóttir.

Title: Pliocene and Pleistocene glaciations of Iceland: a brief overview of the glacial history / Áslaug Geirsdóttir.
Author(s): Geirsdóttir, Áslaug.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier
In: Quaternary glaciations - extent and chronology : a closer look. (2011.),
Abstract: High volcanic productivity of Iceland produces environment where constructive geological processes outweigh destructive ones, resulting in excellent preservation of Late Tertiary and Quaternary record, with sedimentary formations protected from erosion by subsequent lava flow sequences. Describes mapping and dating of remnants of glacial deposits embedded in basaltic lava flows, revealing intermittent glaciation since Late Pliocene. Rock sequences of different areas are correlated using K-Ar dating and paleomagnetic stratigraphy. Identified glacial deposits in Icelandic stratigraphy are correlated with Tropical Pacific benthic isotope record and magnetic polarity timescale. Terrestrial record appears to capture large-scale processes in North Atlantic region through Late Cenozoic.
