Record #199796:

Quantifying 20th century glacier change in the Sierra Nevada, California / H.J. Basagic, A.G. Fountain.

Title: Quantifying 20th century glacier change in the Sierra Nevada, California / H.J. Basagic, A.G. Fountain.
Author(s): Basagic, H. J.
Fountain, A. G.
Date: 2011.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2011.), Vol. 43(3) (2011)
Abstract: Examines glaciers of Sierra Nevada, California. Compiles inventory, quantifies magnitude and rate of change in glacier extent, and examines climate drivers. Divides temporal parttern of 20th-century glacier retreat into four periods: 1903-1920, when glacier area did not change and was at its fullest Little Ice Age extent; 1920-2960, when glaciers retreated rapidly; 1970s-early 1980s, when glaciers stopped retreating and, in some cases, started to advance; and late 1980s-present, when glaciers began to retreat again. Pattern is similar to glacier-covered regions elsewhere in western US.
