Sediment melt-migration dynamics in perennial Antarctic lake ice / Steven M. Jepsen, Edward E. Adams, John C. Priscu.
Title: | Sediment melt-migration dynamics in perennial Antarctic lake ice / Steven M. Jepsen, Edward E. Adams, John C. Priscu. |
Author(s): | Jepsen, Steven M. Adams, Edward E. Priscu, John C. |
Date: | 2010. |
In: | Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2010.), Vol. 42(1) (2010) |
Abstract: | Describes examination of sediment melt-migration dynamics using combination of laboratory experiments, field observations, and modelling. Laboratory experiments were conducted at SubZero Science and Engineering Laboratory at Montana State University using ice-blocks, sediment (or sediment 50% saturated with JP8 jet fuel), and short-wave radiation to imitate mid-November peak-sunlight field conditions. Field work was conducted between November 2007 and March 2008 at lakes Fryxell and Bonney in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, and required measuring depth reached by experimental sediment patch over study period, and ambient radiation. Model is proposed to compute melt rate of sediment after it has become ensconced in ice, according to contribution of shortwave absorption, thermal conduction, and latent heat. |
