Record #199692:
Snow distribution patterns on Svalbard glaciers derived from radio-echo soundings / Mariusz Grabiec, and 3 others.
Title: | Snow distribution patterns on Svalbard glaciers derived from radio-echo soundings / Mariusz Grabiec, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Grabiec, Mariusz. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | Polish Polar Research. (2011.), Vol. 32(4) (2011) |
Abstract: | Presents results of snow accumulation studies carried out from 2006-2009 on glaciers of different types: valley glacier, ice plateau and ice cap. Shallow radio echo-sounding method is used to determine snow depth. Distinguishes following snow distribution patterns on Svalbard glaciers: precipitation pattern, precipitation-redistribution pattern, redistribution pattern and complex pattern. Precipitation pattern assumes that snow distribution on glaciers follows altitudinal gradient. If accumulation gradient is significantly modified by local factors like wind erosion and redeposition, or local variability of precipitation, accumulation pattern turns into precipitation-redistribution pattern. |
