Sea-ice distribution in the Bering and Chukchi seas: information from the historical whaleships' logbooks and journals / Andrew R. Mahoney, and 4 others.
Title: | Sea-ice distribution in the Bering and Chukchi seas: information from the historical whaleships' logbooks and journals / Andrew R. Mahoney, and 4 others. |
Author(s): | Mahoney, Andrew R. |
Date: | 2011. |
In: | Arctic. (2011.), Vol. 69(4) (2011) |
Abstract: | Provides context for satellite data revealing dramatic losses of Northern Hemisphere sea ice since end of 1970s by presenting observations taken from logbooks and journals of whaling vessels cruising in Bering and Chukchi seas between 1850 and 1910. Compares observations with sea-ice data from 1972-82, which predate majority of recent changes and cover period recognised as relative maximum in recent Bering Sea ice extent. Observations from 1850s and 1860s show that winter maximum sea-ice extent was similar to that during 1972-82, but in summer sea ice extended further south than it does today. |
