Abstract: Discusses observations from semi-enclosed fjord basin, Van Mijenfjorden (Spitsbergen) that show considerable variations in hydrography and circulation on short timescales (hours) in summer season. Depth and distribution of low salinity upper water layer respond quickly to changes in wind field. Coriolis effect has essential impact on circulation, inducing eddy-like flow patterns and strong cross-fjord gradients. Within upper layer, lowest salinity values and highest temperatures are found on northern side of fjord in calm wind periods.
