Record #199439:

Winter movements of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Bering Sea / John J. Citta, and 7 others.

Title: Winter movements of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Bering Sea / John J. Citta, and 7 others.
Author(s): Citta, John J.
Date: 2012.
In: Arctic. (2012.), Vol. 65(1) (2012)
Abstract: Documents movements of 11 bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in Bering Sea during two winters. Whales were tagged with satellite-linked transmitters. Average date that whales entered Bering sea was 14 December in 2008 and 26 November in 2009. Nearly all tagged whales entered Bering Sea west of Big Diomede Island. In winter 2008-2009, whales were distributed in line extending from Bering Strait to Cape Navarin, whereas in 2009-2010, distribution shifted south of St Lawrence Island, extending from Cape Navarin to St Matthew Island. Whales were most likely to be found in areas with 90%-100% sea-ice concentration and were generally located far from ice edge and polynyas.
