Record #199383:

Risk from the cold-climate hazards in the Canadian Cordillera / Jim Gardner.

Title: Risk from the cold-climate hazards in the Canadian Cordillera / Jim Gardner.
Author(s): Gardner, Jim.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell
In: Changing cold environments : a Canadian perspective. (2012.),
Abstract: Describes concepts of risk from natural hazards, and sites and corridors of vulnerability (e.g. settlements and roads), before outlining attributes of Cordilleran environment that contribute to hazards. Examines changing risk in relation to climate variability and human impacts on geo-ecological conditions, listing significant events and discussing, e.g., avalanche and glacier hazards, slope failure, debris flows, and floods. Concludes that short term risk from natural hazards has increased as people and property are more exposed to them, particularly through expansion of population, settlements and infrastructure, and increases in risk-taking activities in areas of multiple and known hazards.
