Record #199378:
Permafrost distribution and stability / Chris Burn.
Title: | Permafrost distribution and stability / Chris Burn. |
Author(s): | Burn, Chris. |
Date: | 2012. |
Publisher: | Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell |
In: | Changing cold environments : a Canadian perspective. (2012.), |
Abstract: | Introduces permafrost zones (continuous, widespread discontinuous and sporadic discontinuous), active (seasonally thawing) layer, and problems presented by permafrost degradation. Examines climatic controls on permafrost distribution in Canada, influences of physiography, vegetation, and ground thermal conductivity, and TTOP model of climate-permafrost relation. Describes thermal regime (equilibrium conditions, temperature-depth variation, geothermal flux, regional depth variation, and influence of water bodies). Discusses effects of climate change on permafrost terrain through ground temperature and active layer thickness changes (encouraged by rising air temperatures and increased snow fall). Reviews climate change in northern Canada since 1898, responses of ground temperature and active layer, and timescale of permafrost response underway throughout. Concludes that permafrost conditions in Canada are well understood at continental scale. |
