Abstract: Presents independent investigations at six institutes of Mpemba effect, in which initially hot water freezes faster than cold water under identical conditions. Presents cooling graphs obtained with various combinations of hot/cold starting temperatures, surrounding air temperature, cooling arrangement and thermocouple placement. Discusses definition of freezing time. Identifies Mpemba effect in results, but also near-impossibility of repeated observation, even under identical initial temperatures of hot/cold waters and surrounding environment. Attributes difficulty to failure to control delicate physical mechanisms directly related to cooling of water, such as heat conduction, evaporation, diffusion, convection, etc. Discusses apparent Mpemba effect in case of supercooling.
