[Dependence of tensile fracture strength of high-density wet snow on density and liquid-water content] / Yasasushi Kurihara, Katsuhisa Kawashima, Kaoro Izumi.

Title: [Dependence of tensile fracture strength of high-density wet snow on density and liquid-water content] / Yasasushi Kurihara, Katsuhisa Kawashima, Kaoro Izumi.
Translated title: Dependence of tensile fracture strength of high-density wet snow on density and liquid-water content.
Author(s): Kurihara, Yasasushi.

Date: 2012.
Language: Japanese.
In: Seppyo : Journal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice. (2012.), Vol. 74(1) (2012)
Abstract: Describes tests on samples from Nishi-honjyozawa snow patch, Mt. Arasawa. Dry densities ranged from 497 to 855 kg/m³, liquid water content from 0 to 16.1% by weight, and observed tensile fracture strengths from 100 to 1,500 kPa. Snow strength increases with dry density, but data scatter indicates strong dependence also on liquid water content. Formalizes relationship between tensile fracture strength of dry snow and density (based on literature and presented data), before modifying to account for liquid-water content. Finds σt=1.0x10⁻⁹ρdry⁴.¹⁷ exp(-0.058ω), where σt is tensile fracture strength of high-density wet snow (kPa), grhodry dry density of wet snow (kg/m₃), and ω liquid-water content by percentage weight.
