Record #199367:

Inilček-Gletscher und Merzbachersee (zentraler Tian Shan) / Hans Fischer.

Title: Inilček-Gletscher und Merzbachersee (zentraler Tian Shan) / Hans Fischer.
Translated title: Inylchek Glacier and Merzbacher Lake (central Tien Shan).
Author(s): Fischer, Hans.
Date: 2010.
Language: German.
In: Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft. (2010.), Vol. 152 (2010)
Abstract: Well-illustrated report of 1990 expedition that observed outbreak of Lake Merzbacher, at confluence of Northern and Southern Inylchek glaciers where intensive ablation produced "glaciokarst" relief. Summarizes climatology and configuration of one of largest non-polar glaciers, with catchment exceeding 7,000 m, 400 km² firn field at 4,200-5,200 m, and 2-2.5 km-wide glacier flowing westward and 14 km beyond lake at 3,400 m. Lake was full at beginning of August, with icebergs calved from Southern Inylchek. Level began to drop on August 5, with water draining inside and beneath Southern Inylchek and "shooting" from four places at end of glacier. Jets spouted 10-20 m high with "earsplitting" noise, dragging along metre-wide blocks of moraine. Outbreak lasted until August 10.
