Abstract: Present theoretical analysis of generation and melting of frost, and freezing of road surface, validated by laboratory experiments on road surface sample. Describes two models, varying in shape of NaCl particles (cubic and spherical), and experimental set-up. Presents development over nine hours of salt concentration, condensate mass, pavement temperature, and near-surface air relative humidity during continuous water-ice-NaCl phase change. Both frost models reproduced experimental observations well.
