Abstract: Describes implementation of robust multi-scale image matching algorithm and application to sequential Radarsat SAR images for extracting high-resolution velocity fields of Antarctic glaciers and ice shelves. Method addresses deficiencies of conventional cross-correlation technique, using approximate match points obtained at coarse resolution as guide for higher resolution matching. Uses local statistical operator embedded at each scale to eliminate match outliers. Progressively refining match precision allows small pixel search range, significantly accelerating computation and reducing bad/spurious matching. Summarizes algorithm and describes implementation as software tool with graphical user interface. Extracts velocity fields for Amery Ice Shelf from Sept 1997 and Sept 2000 image mosaics, with maximum speed around 1300 m/a, and estimated error in surface displacement 42.8 m.
