Monitoring snowpack evolution using interferometric synthetic aperture radar on the North Slope of Alaska, USA / Elias J. Deeb, Richard R. Forster, Douglas L. Kane.

Title: Monitoring snowpack evolution using interferometric synthetic aperture radar on the North Slope of Alaska, USA / Elias J. Deeb, Richard R. Forster, Douglas L. Kane.

In: International Journal of Remote Sensing. (2011.), Vol. 32(13-14) (2011)
Abstract: Maps InSAR phase changes and theoretical change in SWE for dry snow in Kuparuk watershed during winter 1993/94, over three-day periods between ERS-1 satellite overpasses (both ascending and descending). Uses dependence of radar signal refraction on snowpack depth and density to extend existing theory to include relationship between spatial patterns of SWE change and wind direction during acquisition. In absence of direct measurements of SWE, links phase-change maps to station snow depth and hourly wind data. Three-day phase changes acquired around precipitation events show relationship with predominant strong wind direction, unlike those acquired without measurable precipitation. Notes potential for measuring snowpack changes at resolutions much higher than manual sampling or passive microwave sensing. Discusses extension to L-band platforms.
