Record #199361:

The Tré-la-Tẽhe rockfall onto the Glacier de la Lex Blanche, Mont Blanc Massif, Italy, in September 2008 / Philip Deline.

Title: The Tré-la-Tẽhe rockfall onto the Glacier de la Lex Blanche, Mont Blanc Massif, Italy, in September 2008 / Philip Deline.
Author(s): Deline, Philip.
Date: 2007.
In: Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2007.), Vol. 31(2) (2007)
Abstract: Examines possible causes for rockfall from east-facing spur of Aiguille de Tré-la-Tẽhe in upper Val Veny. In probably largest such fall in Mont Blanc Massif since 2005, around 50,000 m³ of rock fell from 3,470 m onto Petit Mont Blanc glacier (main tributary of Lex Blanche) before travelling more than 1 km. Discusses evidence from direct observation and lateral/medial moraines for earlier slope instability. Observes that debuttressing of rock wall by glacier downwasting over two decades may have reduced rock wall stability, but permafrost degradation is probably main trigger, as for an estimated 55% of 62 other rockfalls observed in massif in 2007 and 2008 (by network of alpine guides and hut keepers established in framework of project PERMAdataROC)
