Record #199360:

Volume decrease of Rutor Glacier (Western Italian Alps) since Little Ice Age: a quantitative approach combining GPR, GPS and cartography / Fabio Villa, and 4 others.

Title: Volume decrease of Rutor Glacier (Western Italian Alps) since Little Ice Age: a quantitative approach combining GPR, GPS and cartography / Fabio Villa, and 4 others.
Author(s): Villa, Fabio.
Date: 2007.
In: Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2007.), Vol. 31(1) (2007)
Abstract: Discusses results of 2006 dGPS-assisted ground penetrating radar survey, aimed at quantifying ice thickness and estimating total glacier volume. Combines with 1996 survey of upper part of basin and interpretation of radar signals to model ice-bedrock interface, and with previously generated surface models to estimate glacier volumes for Little Ice Age, 1975, 1991 and 2006. Uses dGPS data to georeference radar tracks, measure ablation rate (by comparison with earlier surface), and establish benchmark for ongoing geodetic mass balance evaluation. Calculates that 500 million m³ of ice was lost from LIA maximum to 1975 (60% reduction). From 1975 to present, 50% of remainder was lost. Rates were -0.5%/yr for LIA-1975, -1.1%/yr for 1975-1991, and -2.1%/yr to 2006.
