Ghiacciao del Calderone (Appenines, Italy): the mass balance of a shrinking Mediterranean glacier / Massimo Pecci, Carlo D'Agata, Claudio Smiraglia.
Title: | Ghiacciao del Calderone (Appenines, Italy): the mass balance of a shrinking Mediterranean glacier / Massimo Pecci, Carlo D'Agata, Claudio Smiraglia. |
Author(s): | Pecci, Massimo. D'Agata, Carlo. Smiraglia, Claudio. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. (2007.), Vol. 31(1) (2007) |
Abstract: | Reports clear evidence of strong shrinkage of Calderone glacier (better defined as two glacierets since split into two ice aprons at end summer 2000), characterized by rapid reductions in surface, volume and thickness. Presents and discusses mass balance data for period 1995-2006, which has seen loss totalling around 4 m w.e. (with maximum negative specific net balance -1.847 m w.e. in 2002). Identifies and discusses relationships between mass balance and climate trends. Uses significant correlation between mass balances and winter precipitation to reconstruct balances for 1920-1994, during which balances were almost constantly negative, with total loss around 60 m w.e. |
