Abstract: Investigates onset of sea-ice melt in Arctic during 1995-2000, using satellite-derived brightness temperature and albedo data for 13 first-year (FY) and multiyear (MY) ice locations. Identifies melt onset from SSM/I passive microwave data once surface temperatures approach freezing, and independently from AVHRR visible/near-IR albedo data. Methods generally produce same date in optimum conditions, but cloud cover frequently restricts albedo data collection and leads to generation of later onset date. For FY ice, average differences are 3 days, and for MY ice around 8 days (due to cloudier conditions). Concludes that either method is capable of determining melt, but passive microwave data has advantage of independence from cloud-free requirement. Presents proof-of-concept demonstration focusing on Laptev Sea FY ice.
