Abstract: Examines temporal and spatial variability of sea-ice Ku-band radar signatures in Southern Ocean during late winter, spring and early summer during 1999-2006. Observes circumpolar broad band of sea ice close to marginal ice zone, characterized by rapid σ⁰ fluctuations and very high radar backscatter. Explains feature by comparing seasonal evolution of σ⁰ with detailed in situ observations of snow and sea-ice properties, and atmospheric forcing derived from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. Results indicate that high backscatter regions are caused by metamorphous snow, formed through re-freezing after short-term melt events. Connects process with episodic passes of low-pressure systems entraining warmer air from north. South of Antarctic Circumpolar Trough, sea ice is uninfluenced by this and shows spatially homogenous microwave signatures with low backscatter.
