Abstract: Investigates flow field near to very coarse "sharkskin" melting surface that appears when ice plate melts into binary aqueous solution. Uses PIV method to study flow field and shadowgraph method to investigate concentration field near to melting front. Discusses correlations between flow field and melting front shapes. Observes that melt water rises from convex parts of melting surface because of buoyancy due to concentration gradient, and high-concentration solution flows toward centres of concave parts. Discusses how these flow structures maintain convex and concave configuration of melting front.
