| Abstract: | Presents photographs of iced trees to illustrate event that "paralysed" city of Moscow, inducing failures of infrastructure including electric power lines and transportation. Forty thousand trees broke under weight of ice and more than 1,000 residents were injured as streets became ice rinks. Presents simulated temperatures in vertical cross-section over Moscow. Freezing rain was caused by snowfall through warm (up to +2°C) air layer at altitude range 0.7-2.0 km over cold layer with sub-freezing temperatures. |
