Record #199352:

A glacier's pace / Cherie Winner.

Title: A glacier's pace / Cherie Winner.
Author(s): Winner, Cherie.
Date: 2010.
In: Oceanus. (2010.), Vol. 48(1) (2010)
Abstract: Reports oceanographic studies in fjords off East Greenland coast, based aboard small privately hired boat in 2008, and Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise in 2009. Campaigns in Sermilik, Kangerdlugssuaq, and "79 N" fjords examined possible role of warm ocean water in melting of floating glacier tongues and acceleration of outlet glaciers. Describes deployment of oceanographic moorings, expendable bathythermographs, etc., from vessels, helicopter, and rifts in ice tongue. Reports presence of three-layered water column, including warm layer able to melt glacier ice, far into fjord and probably to ice front. Observes influence of storms on fjord inflow/outlow. Discusses attribution of ice tongue changes to climate change, importance of indigenous knowledge in fieldwork, and issues raised by political nature of Greenpeace.
