| Abstract: | Describes methodology for using pattern recognition theory to formalize computer identification of form class and ice crystal size from photographs. Identifies most important tasks as primary photograph segmentation, discriminating formal matter identifying objects, and identifying formal class limit. Presents classification scheme, sample snow column stratigraphy, and examples of method components: photograph halftone transformation and segmentation; diagnostic signs (sharp difference of colour on crystal sides, rectilinear/curvilinear borders); and analysis of crystal transparency. |
