| Abstract: | Explains significance of "glaciation line"; that glaciers can exist on mountains whose summits lie above this level (always slightly higher than equilibrium and firn lines). Uses data from over 3,000 glaciers to establish dependences of firn line altitude on average summer temperature and annual precipitation total. Combines with digital models of relief and humidifiying characteristics to calculate firn line altitudes at more than 770,000 sites in Kyrgyzstan. Finds firn line about 240 m lower on average than glaciation line. Calculates total glacier accumulation areas for various climates (mean summer air temperature -5 to +5° below/above present, and precipitation total 0.5 to 1.5 times present). Presents maps for air temperature changes of -5 and +5°C. |
