Abstract: Describes installation of AWS equipped with 12 different sensors to study boundary layer in glacier ablation zone (first such in Italy). Aims to compare results from Forni and Morteratsch glaciers (similar type, geometry, size and aspect) and contribute to international network of micro-meteorological studies of glaciers. Presents data from first year, including sonic ranger measurements of snow thickness and stratigraphy (correlated with snow pit profile), and preliminary comments. Finds results consistent with those from similar locations around world. Uses observations of incoming/outgoing radiation to calculate albedos of 0.7 and 0.3 for snow and ice, with annual value 0.417, showing that only c. 21% of solar radiation available at top of atmosphere is absorbed by Forni Glacier.
