| Abstract: | Determines Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum extent, volume (relative to present) and equilibrium line altitude of glaciers of second highest massif in Dolomites (3,264 m). Summarizes climate and cartographic and glaciological histories. Presents geomorphological map. Describes current states of Lower and Upper Antelao glaciers, and Ciampestrin and Val Salvella glacierets. Describes creation of DEM from field surveys and literature and presents reconstruction for LIA maximum. Upper and Lower glacier ELAs were 2,550 and 2,400 m (attributes difference to aspect), areas were 72.9 and 38.5 ha (now reduced to 25.9 and 13.7 ha), and volumes exceeded today's by 18.5 and 13 m million m³. Since current ELAs may be above maximum altitudes, glacier may soon be dead ice. |
