Abstract: Uses LiDAR data from airborne campaigns over period 2003-2008 to assess accuracy of ASTER GDEM in Greenland. LiDAR elevation data have resolution and accuracy around 1 m and 20-30 cm RMSE. Study areas include ice-free regions, local ice caps, and ice sheet margin. Derives linear error of 15-65 m, far greater than 20-m ASTER GDEM product specification, and mean difference (bias) of 10-20 m. Estimation is biased by both seasonal and climatic changes in local ice caps over period 2000-2009 spanned by imagery. Steep slopes in coastal regions, and number of scenes use to generate ASTER GDEM are also factors. Discusses sources of data to improve GDEM, which remains most accurate available at very high spatial resolution.
