Abstract: Analyzes multi-temporal Landsat and ASTER imagery to assess terminus fluctuation rates of region's glaciers and compare with those further east in Pakistan. Uses imagery from 1976 to 2007 to study 52 Alpine glaciers in Hindu Kush of various sizes, of which 76% retreated, 16% advanced and 8% were relatively stable. Fluctuation rates varied from -15.5 to 10.2 m/yr, with no clear spatial trend. Also uses Landsat ETM+ images from end of 2001 ablation season to assess transient snowline altitude, which averages 4,539± 212 m asl. Identifies possible spatial gradient in glacier fluctuations across Western Himalaya, governed by precipitation and with glacier retreat dominant in western Pakistan.
