Abstract: Investigates distribution, morphometry and surface weathering of relict openwork block accumulations in area west of main escarpment of southern Africa, between Thabana-Ntlenyana (highest summit) and Sani Top. Units lie predominantly on south-facing slopes, with phase of enhanced block production evident from concentration in upper layer of colluvium, and slope mobility shown in blockfield fabrics and downslope increase in relative age of block surfaces. Slope mantles predate onset of colder period. Attributes observations to depressed temperatures and seasonal freeze, with no need to invoke permafrost conditions. Argues against either deep snow cover or localised glaciation of south-facing slopes during Last Glacial, supporting instead relatively arid periglacial environment.
