Record #199293:

The characteristics and formation of a High-Arctic proglacial icing / Richard Hodgkins, Martyn Tranter, Julian A. Dowdeswell.

Title: The characteristics and formation of a High-Arctic proglacial icing / Richard Hodgkins, Martyn Tranter, Julian A. Dowdeswell.
Author(s): Hodgkins, Richard.

Dowdeswell, Julian A.
Date: 2004.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2004.), Vol. 86(3) (2004)
Abstract: Describes icing that accumulates over winter between terminus and end moraine of Scott Turnerbreen, Svalbard. Icing is around 750 m long, 50-150 m wide, and 2 m thick. Ground thermal-regime modelling indicates equilibrium permafrost depth of at least 200 m, ruling out extraglacial water as source for icing near to "cold-based" glacier. Discusses evidence for glacial provenance, including water balance, observed extension of icing within east ice-marginal drainage channel, high solute concentrations in icing interstitial water, and estimates of available heat fluxes and hydraulic conductivity. Suggests that winter drainage continues via Darcian percolation through thawed sub-glacial sediments, and that presence of icing is not always reliable indicator of glacier thermal regime.
