Morphometric analysis on the size, shape and areal distribution of glacial cirques in the Maritime Alps (western French-Italian Alps) / Paolo Roberto Federici, Matteo Spagnolo.

Title: Morphometric analysis on the size, shape and areal distribution of glacial cirques in the Maritime Alps (western French-Italian Alps) / Paolo Roberto Federici, Matteo Spagnolo.
Author(s): Federici, Paolo Roberto.
Spagnolo, Matteo.
Date: 2004.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2004.), Vol. 86(3) (2004)
Abstract: Analyzes morphometry of 432 glacial cirques using GIS and DEM. Describes derivation of morphometric parameters (altitudinal range, length, width, area, min/mean/max elevation, mean slope, azimuth and circularity) and their interpretation in light of known and hypothetical topo-climatic and tectonic conditions to examine cirque formation and development. Finds that cirques in Maritime Alps develop more in length and width than in altitudinal range, but are nevertheless almost circular, ranging in area from 0.06 to 5.2 km². Most cirques are on north-facing slopes, but largest exist on SSW-facing slopes and at high elevations due to increased snowfall. Attributes lack of correlation between cirque size and elevation to repeated glaciation.
