| Abstract: | Examines correlations between bedrock strength measurements (point load strength index, Schmidt hammer rebound, rock unit weight, and rock mass strength) and three cross-profile indices of glaciated valley morphology. Results shows that interplay between bedrock mass strength and dynamics of eroding glacier is important control on valley morphological development: broad U-shaped valleys develop on closely jointed metasedimentary bedrock of low mass strength; and steeper sided valleys with narrower cross-profiles develop on igneous bedrock of high mass strength. Discusses applicability of b-FR model of valley development and implications for modelling of topographic development beneath ice sheets. |
