Record #199289:

An outline of the Quaternary stratigraphy of Austria / Dirk van Husen, Jürgen M. Reitner.

Title: An outline of the Quaternary stratigraphy of Austria / Dirk van Husen, Jürgen M. Reitner.
Author(s): van Husen, Dirk.
Reitner, Jürgen M.
Date: 2011.
In: Eiszeitalter und Gegenwart : E&G : Quaternary Science Journal. (2011.), Vol. 69(2-3) (2011)
Abstract: Subdivides mappable depositional units using lithostratigraphic and allostratigraphic criteria. Early Pleistocene traces of glaciation are absent and palaeomagnetically correlated loess-palaeosol sequences document conditions slightly warmer than Middle Pleistocene. Four major Middle-Late Pleistocene glaciations (Günz, Mindel, Riss, Würm) are documented by proglacial sediments topped by basal till, terminal moraines linked with terrace bodies, and loess accumulation. Climatic steering of sedimentation can be recognised in context of glacier advance and permafrost/congelifraction dispersion into Alpine foreland. Riss/Würm glaciations are correlated with MIS 6/2, and simultaneity of Günz and Mindel with global climatic deterioration during MIS 16 and 12 is plausible. Phases of less climatic deterioration and glaciation are reflected only in loess profiles (e.g. Krems Schiessstätte)
