Chronology of Weichselian main ice marginal positions in north-eastern Germany / Christopher Lüthgens, Margot Böse.

Title: Chronology of Weichselian main ice marginal positions in north-eastern Germany / Christopher Lüthgens, Margot Böse.

Abstract: Notes Weichselian chronology of north-eastern Germany hitherto based mainly on morphostratigraphy and radiocarbon ages of organic sediment underlying glacigenic deposits. Integrates recent direct numerical datings, e.g., OSL dating of glaciofluvial deposits and surface exposure dating of erratic boulders, into process-based model for landscape development and proposes new chronology for main ice-marginal positions. Discusses model in context of results from neighbouring Poland and Denmark. Data support twofold last glaciation, with Brandenburg advance in late MIS 3 to early MIS 2, and Pomeranian advance reaching maximum extent at ~20 ka. Final stabilization of land surface after initial deglaciation was highly dependent on active landscape transformation during phases characterized by periglacial conditions. First numerical ages indicate activity phase at ~15 ka.
