Record #199279:

Eis unter der Lupe: wissenschaftlicher Blick ins Herz der Eisfälle / M. Montagnat, J. Weiss, F. Damilano.

Title: Eis unter der Lupe: wissenschaftlicher Blick ins Herz der Eisfälle / M. Montagnat, J. Weiss, F. Damilano.
Translated title: Ice under the magnifier: a scientific look into the heart of frozen waterfalls.
Author(s): Montagnat, M.
Weiss, J.
Damilano, F.
Date: 2012.
Language: German.
In: Alpen : Zeitschrift des Schweizer Alpen-Clubs. (2012.), Vol. 1 (2012)
Abstract: Describes four-year study of "free-standing" frozen waterfalls (anchored at top and bottom, but otherwise free of contact with rock) at three high-altitude sites in French and Italian Alps. Reviews ice-fall formation studies. Discusses observations of growth, pressure and temperature, photo sequence spanning rupture, and grain structure. Associates horizontal fractures at level of upper anchorage with tensile stress due to rapid temperature variations in structure unable to change volume freely. Estimates that cooling of 6-8°C/hr could allow ice-axe blow, e.g., to trigger collapse. Danger lessens for column fixed to rock along entire height ("cigar"), and "stalactite" structures free to change volume. Considers rapid variations around 0°C no more critical than those in colder conditions.
