Record #199278:

Auf dem Gletscher: bitte anseilen! / Kurt Winkler.

Title: Auf dem Gletscher: bitte anseilen! / Kurt Winkler.
Translated title: On glacier: please rope up!.
Author(s): Winkler, Kurt.
Date: 2011.
Language: German.
In: Alpen : Zeitschrift des Schweizer Alpen-Clubs. (2011.), Vol. 3 (2011)
Abstract: Notes that crevasse falls, though rare, are almost always fatal when victim is unroped. Recommends rope whenever walking on snow-covered glacier. Skiers and snowboarders should rope up in crevasse zones; also in poor visibility, fresh or soft snow, and light or irregular snow cover. Rope hardly hinders climb, but descending with tight rope is difficult. Discusses placement of party members, braking knots (help to arrest fall, but make rescue more difficult) and rope loops (aid load transfer to anchorage). Recommends: wearing harness to allow roping up en-route; increasing distance to person in front by ski length for climbing; not stopping in tight groups; wearing one ski when attaching skins; and travelling square-on to obvious crevasses on descent, checking trajectory.
